Appleby lies at the heart of the lush Eden Valley, set in a great loop of the river and protected on its south side by a well-preserved Norman Castle. One of the most picturesque market towns in Northern England, it was originally the County Town of Westmorland.
Sheltered from the East by the High Pennines and from the West by the Lakeland Fells, Appleby enjoys a milder, drier climate than most of Cumbria, making it an ideal base for exploring the countryside or simply relaxing in the tranquil surroundings of the town.
The heart of the town is Boroughgate, a beautiful street which links the castle with the fine mediaeval church of St. Lawrence, lined by graceful mature trees and fine old buildings. Here there is an opportunity to explore the town's specialist shops to relax in a cafe or public house. Not far from the town centre is the railway station, one of the major stops along the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway, providing an opportunity for trips through the superb landscapes.
Appleby is centre for a number of important events throughout the year, including its famous three hundred year old Horse Fair in June and the increasingly popular Jazz Festival in July and country markets throughout the summer. These, together with varied opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities in the local countryside, and to choose from a wide selection of quality hotels and guest houses, make the town an ideal base for exploring the lesser known parts of Eden
