One of the most charming corners of Appleby lies hidden behind the old houses in Boroughgate.  Enter the doorway beneath the sign of the Courtyard Gallery and walk along a passage,  and find yourself in a small and unexpected courtyard.  Vines and shrubs soften the ancient 300 year old stonework,  and overhang the outdoor tables and chairs.  While through a wrought-iron gate and along another passageway a secluded secret garden can be glimpsed.

The gallery itself is housed on the upper floor of the centuries old granary,  which in it's time has served as a dame school and an artist's studio.  This is approached from the outside by a flight of wooden stairs.  The character of the building, with it's beams and deepset windows,  has been preserved and now affords an ideal setting for a distinguishing collection of original paintings,  etchings,  pottery,  glass,  jewellery,  turned wood and a large selection of some of the finest hand-made cards in the area.

One end of the Gallery is furnished with tables and chairs where fresh coffee or a choice of blends of tea and homemade organic cakes and biscuits can be enjoyed.

Whether you buy or browse,  for those who delight in quaint and tasteful sorroundings a visit to Courtyard Gallery will remain among your happy memories of a wonderful day out.
